Turkstra Enters Builders' HallThe Hamilton-Halton Home Builders’ Association (HHHBA) welcomed Dr. Carl Turkstra into its Hall of Fame on Oct. 14 at the Hamilton G&CC in Ancaster.
The former president of Turkstra Lumber Ltd., which was founded in Hamilton by his father Peter, Dr. Turkstra helmed the company for nearly two decades before turning the wheel over to his son Peter, representing the third generation of the family-run business.
As a research professor, Dr. Turkstra developed what came to be known as “Turkstra’s Rule” for load combinations in structural design. The rule has been used in building codes in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Asia. He has twice received the State of the Art Award of the American Society of Civil Engineers, of which he is a Fellow.
“As impressive as his credentials are, it’s what people don’t see that really makes him a wonderful addition to our Hall of Fame,” says Bernice Flegg, president of the HHHBA. “Not only is he is a staunch supporter of local arts and educational institutions, putting his name behind many not-for-profit boards and fundraising initiatives, but he’s also actively involved in a number of school nutrition programs designed to help feed undernourished children in our community. He does this quietly and without fanfare.”
