McMaster University is launching a new initiative to encourage the creation of start-up companies based on inventions and research discoveries made at the university, as well as at Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Healthcare.
Dubbed preINC, the program is aimed at the pre-incubation phase of business creation. It will provide business support to individuals, such as faculty and students, interested in starting a company to commercialize discoveries and inventions made at McMaster.
Occupying 1,000 square feet in the newly renovated McMaster Innovation Park, preINC is co-located with the McMaster Industry Liaison Office. Participants have ready access to the office’s legal, commercial and marketing expertise, including intellectual property and business development professionals. As projects progress, new companies can be initially housed at preINC.
The initiative has kicked off with four participants. Adiga Life Sciences currently has several active programs in place with McMaster, including ongoing work to identify the key T-cell epitopes involved in certain allergies, which will guide the design of tolerance-generating vaccines to these allergies. Digital Dash is pioneering the area of multi-touch displays. Its Reconfigurable Tactile
Display employs familiar physical controls, such as knobs, buttons and sliders, in
addition to providing touch input, all while remaining totally reconfigurable in software. ProFitHR markets and develops a Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) system used to select hundreds of candidates from thousands of applicants to professional programs at institutions throughout Canada, the U.S. and Australia. And Liquid Fiber Displays provides high-res LED video displays for the High Brightness Display Market using a disruptive platform technology—meaning outdoor displays, such as those you’d see in Dundas Square, can be viewed much closer and at a much higher resolution, but at a lower cost.
“PreINC gives us access to specific skillsets,” says Liquid Fiber’s Nimesh Bahl, who founded the company with partner Cristian Nunez. “Whether we’re meeting with an investor, looking at patents, or if we’re signing a deal and need legal resources or marketing.
